What is Patreon?

Patreon is a platform on which artists and creators can earn a living from their passion, creativity and work. What? Allowing fans to financially support their favorite artists by sponsoring through a system of micropayments.




Kickstarter difference
Crowdfunding platforms "traditional" as Kickstarter or Indigogo are more focused on finance "large" projects. Patreon, however, is intended to finance the recurrent activity of artists and creators, not specific projects.

Kickstarter is a campaign for each project. After the campaign, and once the project is executed, the artist or creator only has the income you may receive from the placing on the market of products that you have created. Except some cases, these revenues, if finally the product is marketed, will not be enough.

In Patreon, however, it is a unique campaign for the artist or creator and his work. Therefore, with Patreon it has a more or less stable recurring revenues amount every month.

It is a kind of fusion between the old model and the new model patronage of crowdfunding, becoming the fan patron (sponsor) the work of their favorite creator.

But it is not a simple donation fan the creator because, as I explain below, the fan will receive something in return for their patronage.

Qué es Patreon?

Patreon es una plataforma en la que los artistas y los creadores pueden ganarse la vida con su pasión, creatividad y trabajo. ¿Cómo? Permitiendo que los fans apoyen económicamente a sus creadores favoritos patrocinándolos mediante un sistema de micropagos.

Diferencia con KickStarter

Las plataformas de crowdfunding “tradicional” como KickStarter o Indigogo están más enfocadas a financiar “grandes” proyectos. Patreon, en cambio, está pensado para financiar la actividad recurrente de artistas y creadores, no de proyectos concretos.

En KickStarter es una campaña por cada proyecto. Terminada la campaña, y una vez ejecutado el proyecto, el artista o creador solo cuenta con los ingresos que pueda recibir de la comercialización en el mercado del producto que haya creado. Salvo algunos casos, esos ingresos, si es que finalmente se comercializa el producto, no serán suficientes.

En Patreon, en cambio, es una única campaña por el artista o creador y su trabajo. Por lo tanto, con Patreon se tiene una cantidad más o menos estable de ingresos recurrentes todos los meses.

Es una especie de fusión entre el antiguo modelo de mecenazgo y el nuevo modelo del crowdfunding, convirtiéndose el fan en mecenas (patrocinador) del trabajo de su creador favorito.

Pero no se trata de una simple donación del fan al creador pues, como explico más adelante, el fan recibirá algo a cambio de su patrocinio.
